THE WONDERS CALVARY

Oh! [LORD] bring us, then, we pray Thee now, near to Thyself. Let us bathe ourselves in communion with [You] our God. Blessed be the love which chose us before the world began. We can never sufficiently adore Thee for Thy [Your] sovereignty, the sovereignty of love which saw us in the ruins of the Fall [Adam’s  original sin], yet loved us notwithstanding all.

We praise, the God of the Eternal Council Chamber and of the Everlasting Covenant, but where shall we find sufficiently fit words with which to praise Him who gave us grace in Christ [Jesus] His Son, before He spread [created] the starry sky.

We also bless Thee, O God, as the God of our redemption, for Thou hast [have] so loved us as to give even Thy dear Son for us. He gave Himself, His very life for us that He might redeem us from all iniquity [sin] and separate us unto Himself to be His peculiar people, zealous for good works. Never can we sufficiently adore free grace and dying love. The wonders of Calvary [the Cross] never cease to be wonders, they are growingly marvelous in our esteem as we think of Him who washed us from our sins in His own blood.

Nor can we cease to praise the God of our regeneration who found us dead and made us live, found us at enmity and reconciled us, found us loving the things of this world and lifted us out of the slough and mire of selfishness and worldliness into the love of divine everlasting things.

ANECDOTE 29: The Triumph of Jesus.

When a Roman general had performed great feats in a foreign country, his highest reward was that the Senate should decree him a triumph [To be Honored with a Great Victor’s parade].

Of course, there was a division of spoil [captured goods]  made on the battle-field, and each soldier and each captain took his share; but every man looked forward rapturously to the day when they should enjoy the public triumph. On a set day the gates of Rome were thrown open; the houses were all decorated; the people climbed to the roofs, or stood in great crowds along the streets. The gates were opened, and by and by the first legion began to stream in with its banners flying, and its trumpets sounding. The people saw the stern warriors as they marched along the street returning from their blood-red fields of battle. After one half of the army had thus defiled [marched in], your eye would rest upon one who was the center of all attraction : riding in a noble chariot, drawn by milk-white horses, there came the conqueror himself, crowned with the laurel crown [of victory] and standing erect.

Chained to his chariot were the kings and mighty men of the regions which he had conquered. Immediately behind them came part of the booty [conquered treasure] . There were carried the ivory and the ebony, and the beasts of the different countries which he had subdued. After these came the rest of the soldiery [soldiers], a long, long stream of valiant men, all of them sharing the triumphs of their captain. Behind them came banners, the old flags which had floated aloft in the battle, the standards which had been taken from the enemy. And after these, large painted emblems of the great victories of the conqueror. Upon one there would be a huge map depicting the rivers which he had crossed, or the seas through which his navy had found their way.

Everything was represented in a picture, and the populace gave a fresh shout as they saw the memorial of each triumph. And behind, with the trophies, would come the prisoners of less eminent rank. Then the rear would be closed with sound of trumpet, adding to the acclamation of the throng. It was a noble day for old Rome. Children would never forget those triumphs; they would reckon their years from the time of one triumph to another. High holiday was kept. Women cast down flowers before the conqueror, and he was the true monarch of the day.

Now, our apostle had evidently seen such a triumph, or read of it, and he takes this as a representation of what Christ did on the cross. He says,“ Jesus made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.” Have you ever thought that the cross could be the scene of a triumph? Most of the old commentators can scarcely conceive it to be true. They say, “This must certainly refer to Christ’s resurrection and ascension.” But, nevertheless, so saith the Scripture, even on the cross Christ enjoyed a triumph. Yes! while those hands were bleeding, the acclamations of angels were being poured upon his head. Yes, while those feet were being rent [torn] with the nails, the noblest spirits in the world were crowding round him with admiration. And when upon that blood-stained cross he died in agonies unutterable, there was heard a shout such as never was heard before for the ransomed in heaven, and all the angels of God with loudest harmony chanted his praise.

Then was sung, in fullest chorus, the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, for he had indeed cut Rahab [A Name for Egypt as a primeval, chaotic, multi-headed sea dragon or Leviathan] and sorely wounded the dragon.

Sing unto the Lord, for he hath triumphed gloriously. The Lord shall reign for ever and ever. 

Sing King of kings, and Lord of lords.

PLENTIFUL REFRESHMENT

Oh, to have one’s soul under heavenly cultivation; no longer a wilderness, but a garden of the Lord! Enclosed from the waste, walled around by grace, planted by instruction, visited by love, weeded by heavenly discipline, and guarded by divine power, one’s favored soul is prepared to yield fruit unto the Lord.

But a garden may become parched for want of water, and then all its herbs decline [dry up], and are ready to die. O my soul, how soon would this be the case were the Lord to leave thee! In the East, a garden without water soon ceases to be a garden at all: nothing can come to perfection, grow, or even live.

When irrigation is kept up, the result is charming. Oh, to have one’s soul watered by the Holy Spirit uniformly - every part of the garden having its own stream; plentifully - a sufficient refreshment coming to every tree and herb [plant], however thirsty by nature it may be; continually -each hour bringing not only its heat, but its refreshment; wisely - each plant receiving just what it needs. In a garden you can see by the verdure [green plants] where the water flows, and you can soon perceive when the Spirit of God comes.

Prayer: O Lord, water me this day, and cause me to yield thee a full reward, for Jesus sake. Amen.

Thank You Father, that You water me today and keep my soul as a watered garden that is walled around by grace, planted by instruction, visited by love, weeded by heavenly discipline, and guarded by Your divine power. Thank you Lord Jesus for [drawing me to Yourself and] saving me. In Jesus name, Amen.

WHEN Dr. [William] Carey [missionary of the 18th century] was suffering from a dangerous illness, the inquiry was made, "If this sickness should prove fatal, what passage would you select as the text for your funeral sermon?" He replied, "Oh, I feel that such a poor sinful creature is unworthy to have anything said about him; but if a funeral sermon must be preached let it be from the words,
 

'Have mercy upon me, 0 God, according to Thy loving-kindness; according unto the multitude of Thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.' "
 

In the same spirit of humility, he directed in his will that the following inscription and nothing more should be cut on his gravestone:
 

“WILLIAM CAREY, BORN AUGUST 17th, 1761: DIED…

A wretched, poor, and helpless worm

On Thy kind arms I fall."

(He died on June 9th 1834, 10 days before Charles Spurgeon was born)

Only on the footing of free grace can the most experienced and most honored of the saints approach their God. The best of men are conscious above all others that they are men at the best.

Empty boats float high [on the water], but heavily laden vessels are low in the water; mere professors can boast [brag], but true children of God cry for mercy on their unprofitableness.

We have need that the Lord should have mercy on our good works, our prayers, our preaching, our almsgivings [tithes and offerings], and our holiest things.

The blood was not only sprinkled on the doorposts of Israel's dwelling houses, but on the sanctuary, the mercy-seat, and the altar, because as sin intrudes into our holiest things, the blood of Jesus is needed to purify them from defilement.

If mercy is needed to be exercised towards our duties, what shall be said of our sins?
How sweet the remembrance that inexhaustible mercy is waiting to be gracious to us, to restore our backslidings, and make our broken bones rejoice! ________________________________________

EVENING August 29

NAZARITES had taken, among others, one vow that debarred [restricted] them from the use of wine. In order that they might not violate the obligation, they were forbidden to drink the vinegar of wine or strong liquors, and to make the rule still more clear, they were not to touch the unfermented juice of grapes, nor even to eat the fruit either fresh or dried [raisins]. In order, altogether, to secure the integrity of the vow, they were not even allowed anything that had to do with the vine; they were, in fact, to avoid the appearance of evil.
 

Surely this is a lesson to the Lord's separated ones [believers], teaching them to come away from sin in every form, to avoid not merely its grosser shapes, but even its spirit and similitude [similarity]. Strict walking [Walking the straight and narrow] is much despised in these days, but rest assured, dear reader, it is both the safest and the happiest. He who yields a point or two to the world is in fearful peril;

he who eats the grapes of Sodom will soon drink the wine of Gomorrah.

 

A little crevice [leak] in the dike in Holland lets in the sea, and the gap speedily swells till a province is drowned.

Worldly conformity, in any degree, is a snare to the soul, and makes it more and more liable to presumptuous sins.

Moreover, as the Nazarite who drank grape juice could not be quite sure whether it might not have endured a degree of fermentation, and consequently could not be clear in heart that his vow was intact, so the yielding, temporizing [contemporary] Christian cannot wear a conscience void of offense, but must feel that the inward monitor [conscience activated by the Holy Spirit] is in doubt of him.

Things doubtful we need not doubt about; they are wrong to us. Things tempting we must not dally [associate or  or play] with, but flee from them with speed.

Better to be sneered at as a Puritan than be despised as a hypocrite. Careful walking may involve much self-denial, but it has pleasures of its own which are more than a sufficient recompense [payment].

A SINNER’S  PRAYER

Whosoever shall call on the name of the lord shall be saved. Acts 2:21

 Pray and call on the name of the Lord Jesus, like this. Won’t you? 

“Lord Jesus, I’m a sinner. I’m lost and hopeless to save myself. Without you and your blood that was shed for me and Your death on the cross  I would spend eternity in Hell’s fire.

Thank you Lord Jesus that You love me and died for me before I was born and that You have always loved me and will never reject or turn your back on me. I know You are the Way, the Truth and the Life and that no one can come to the Father but by You.  

Thank you, Father that You have caused for me to see myself as I am; a lost sinner.  But,  because of Your love and goodness, You have made a way and given me the desire to come to You, to turn away from my sin and to trust in You, Lord Jesus.  You took my place on the cross and provided the way for  me to be forgiven. Thank You.
Thank You that You prompted a desire in me to believe in You, the only begotten  Son of God who died on the cross to be the sacrifice that would  atone for my sins.

Thank You, Father for Your love that allowed Jesus to suffer and die in my place. Thank You that You raised Jesus from the dead. He is RISEN and is ALIVE and in Him we are victorious over sin, death and the grave and in Christ Jesus I am free.

You raised Jesus from the dead, gave Him a Glorified body and after he was seen by many witnesses on earth You took Him up to reign with You  in heaven.  

Thank you, Father,  for saving me in the name, of Your only begotten Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Thank you, Holy Spirit, that you always give witness to and exalt the Lord Jesus Christ.

God has preserved His Word through The Masoretic Hebrew of the Old Testament and the GreekTextus Receptus of the New:
 

In contrast, the Incomplete and unsealed codices of Sinaiticus and Vaticanus are not translated from the  over 5,312 Majority Text Greek manuscripts, that became the Textus Receptus [Original Masoretic Hebrew and the Greek Textus Receptus]. Sinaiticus and Vaticanus present variant, ambiguous and erroneous readings rather than that of the well-established and settled texts. They disagree often with one another as well as with the settled majority texts. Thus, an attempt to create a pretext that will continue to justify a never-ending demand for additional editions and interpretations. These unsettled differences and bias in certain sectarian doctrine [dogma] have led to the production of multiple “modern” editions with ambiguities, many variant readings and confusion from the explosion of unending, new editions.

Profit-driven publishers have embraced such an economic windfall to sell a continual flow of “new and better” English edition of The Bible. They give too little attention to the fidelity and accuracy already settled [in heaven] in majority manuscripts of the Masoretic Hebrew and the  Greek Textus Receptus.

God, Himself, providentially protects and preserves His Word. His Word is the God-breathed, self-authenticating, immutable [unchanging and unchangeable], eternal, inerrant, infallible, infinite and all-powerful Word, settled in heaven. He is not the author of confusion.

The above link is to search for specific words or Scriptures in the King James inerrant and infallible  English Version  (KJV)  because it is providentially protected and preserved by GOD Himself through the only translation into English by faithful brethren from the 5,312 established majority text manuscripts MT from which the New Testament  Greek Textus Receptus [received text] was taken  and the Hebrew Masoretic Text of the Old Testament (Jewish Tanakh).  These manuscripts are providentially protected, and frequently give greater glory to God when compared to variant readings of all modern translations from Modern Critical Texts based on only 55 hand picked inferior Greek manuscripts fabricated from either Westcott and Hort or Nestle and Aland. Both of these Greek textual sources follow an assumption that OLDER IS BETTER. Of course, this assumption is not valid if the older manuscripts contain error.

 

The established majority manuscripts and the Textus Receptus avoid doctrinal error, and inaccuracies in translation, uninspired editorial notations, variant or ambiguous readings which taken from Codices Vaticanus, or Sinaiticus.

In 1870, The Anglican Church of England passed a resolution to revise the English Bible. The New Testament revision committee which finally consisted of 25 scholars (though only about 16 eventually attended the meetings) which included Westcott and Hort. The committee worked for ten years in the Jerusalem chamber, and these two scholars swept the Revision Committee along with them after work commenced. In fact, the “Cambridge trio” (Westcott, Hort and Lightfoot) colluded with others to dominate the meetings with their views of the text and to defeat any who opposed them. Their *letters reveal this conspiracy:

The only voice defending the Textus Receptus was Dr Scrivener, probably the foremost scholar of the day in the manuscripts of the Greek New Testament and the history of the Text. But he was systematically outvoted by the Cambridge trio and outdone by Hort’s powerful debating skill. When the revision was completed, the revision committee had altered the Greek Text in 5,337 places,

thus violating the original rule that had been set for the committee of not altering the Greek Text unless absolutely necessary to do so.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, let it be said that no matter how good any modern version of the New Testament is in other ways, it is clearly blemished if the work of Westcott and Hort is present in it. The presence of their work means that it is based on a defective text. Those who want to honor the Word of God must not promote the use of any of these versions by the church, not because the content of the version is entirely  evil in itself, but because being contented to use a weakened version rather than the existing, preserved, without error unblemished one, dishonors God. If God has preserved for His people a good Greek text of the New Testament for 18 centuries, how dishonoring it would be to Him if His people now chose instead to use versions that are  based on  defective Greek manuscript  created by Westcott & Hort or Nestle & Aland.

 

Let the biblical story of Nadab and Abihu be a lesson for us all:
