PRAYER 24, July 3rd  Part 8 of 11

A GUIDE ALL THE WAY Lord help us to conduct ourselves aright [righteously] as Church members; may we love our brethren [brothers and sisters]; may we seek their good and their edification [building up and encouragement], their comfort, their health. And oh! may such of us as are called to preach have grace equal to that responsibility.

Lord make every Christian to be clear [blameless] of the blood of all those round about him. We know that there are some who profess [claim] to be Thy people, who do not seem to care one whit [bit] about the souls of their fellow men. God forgive this inhumanity to men [mankind], this treason to the King of kings. Rouse the Church, [wake us up] we pray Thee, to a tenderness of heart towards those among whom we dwell. Let all the churches feel that they are ordained to bless their neighbors.

 

[I ask this dear Father in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.]

ANECDOTE 331: Christ in the Sermon

A young man had been preaching in the presence of a venerable [highly respected] divine, and after he had done he went to the old minister, and said, “What do you think of my sermon?” “A very poor sermon, indeed,” said he. “A poor sermon ?” said the young man, “It took me a long time to study it.” “Ay, no doubt of it.” “Why, did you not think my explanation of the text a very good one?” “Oh, yes,” said the old preacher, “very good, indeed.” “Well, then, why do you say it is a poor sermon? Didn’t you think the metaphors were appropriate, and the arguments conclusive ?” “Yes, they were very good as far as that goes, but still it was a very poor sermon.” “Will you tell me why you think it a poor sermon ? “ “Because,” said he, “there was no Christ in it.” “Well,” said the young man, “Christ was not in the text; we are not to be preaching Christ always, we must preach what is in the text.”

So the old man said, “don’t you know, young man, that from every town, and every village, and every little hamlet in England, wherever it may be, there is a road to London ?” “Yes,” said the young man. “Ah !” said the old divine, “and so from every text of Scripture, there is a road to the metropolis of the Scriptures, that is, Christ. And, my dear brother, your business is, when you get to a text, to say, 

 

Now what is the road to Christ? 

 and then preach a sermon, running along the road towards the great metropolis Christ. And,” said he,

“I have never yet found a text that had not got a road to Christ in it, and if ever I do find one that has not got a road to Christ in it, I will make one; I will go over hedge and ditch but I would get at my Master, for the sermon cannot do any good unless there is a savor [message] of Christ in it.”

We need a guide. Sometimes we would give all that we have to be told exactly what to do, and where to turn. We are willing to do right, but we do not know which out of two roads we are to follow. Oh, for a guide! The Lord our God condescends [reaches down to us] to serve us as guide. He knows the way, and will pilot us along it till we reach our journey’s end in peace.

 

Surely we do not desire more infallible direction. Let us place ourselves absolutely under His guidance, and we shall never miss [or lose]  our way. Let us make Him our God and we shall find Him our guide. If we follow His law we shall not miss the right road of life, provided we first learn to lean upon Him in every step that we take.

 

Our comfort is, that as He is our God forever and ever, He will never cease to be with us as our guide. -Even unto death- will He [He will] lead us, and then we shall dwell with Him eternally, and go no more out forever. This promise of divine guidance involves life-long security: salvation at once, guidance unto our last hour, and then endless blessedness. 

 

Should not [Shouldn't] each one seek this in youth, rejoice in it in middle life, and repose [rest] in it in old age? This day [Today] let us look up for guidance before we trust ourselves [to go] out of doors [outside the house].

 

Prayer: Thank You Father, for the promise that You will be my guide and that if I follow Your law and trust in You, You will guide me in each step I take. I am encouraged greatly to know that You will guide me even unto death. Help me to look to You always, before I take another single step. I pray this in Your name, Lord Jesus, Amen.

PHARAOH'S dream [from which this scripture is taken] has too often been my waking experience. My days of sloth have ruinously destroyed all that I had achieved in times of zealous industry; my seasons of coldness have frozen all the genial glow of my periods of fervency and enthusiasm; and my fits of worldliness have thrown me back from my advances in the divine life. I had need [needed] to beware of lean[skinny] prayers, lean[skinny] praises, lean[skinny] duties, and lean[skinny] experiences, for these will eat up the fat of my comfort and peace.

If I neglect prayer for ever so short a time, I lose all the spirituality to which I had attained; if I draw no fresh supplies from heaven, the old corn in my granary is soon consumed by the famine which rages in my soul. When the caterpillars of indifference, the cankerworms of worldliness, and the palmerworms of self-indulgence lay my heart completely desolate and make my soul to languish, all my former fruitfulness and growth in grace avails me nothing whatever.

How anxious [eager] should I be to have no lean-fleshed days, no ill-favored hours! If every day I journeyed towards the goal of my desires I should soon reach it, but backsliding leaves me still far off from the prize of my high calling, and robs me of the advances I had so laboriously made. The only way all my days can be as the "fat kine [cows] " is to feed them in the right meadow [pasture]: to spend them [go shopping] with the Lord, in His service, in His company, in His fear, and in His way. Why should not every year be richer than the past, in love, and use fulness, and joy? I am nearer the celestial [heavenly] hills, I have had more experience of my Lord, and should be more like Him. 0 Lord, keep far from me the curse of leanness of soul; let me not have to cry, "My leanness, my leanness, woe unto me!" but may I be well-fed and nourished in Your house, that I may praise Your name.

WE must not imagine that we are suffering for Christ, and with Christ, if we are not in Christ. Beloved friend, are you trusting to Jesus only? If not, whatever you may have to mourn over on earth, you are not "suffering with Christ," and have no hope of reigning with Him in heaven. Neither are we to conclude that all a Christian's sufferings are sufferings with Christ, for it is essential that he be called by God to suffer. If we are rash and imprudent, and run into positions for which neither providence nor grace has fitted us, we ought to question whether we are not rather [more accurately] described sinning than communing with Jesus. If we let passion take the place of judgment, and self-will reign instead of Scriptural authority [Biblical revelation, God’s Word], we will fight the Lord's battles with the devil's weapons, and if we cut our own fingers we must not be surprised. Again, in troubles that come as the result of sin, we must not dream that we are suffering with Christ. When Miriam spoke evil of Moses, and the leprosy polluted her, she was not suffering for God. Moreover, suffering that God accepts must have God's glory as its end. If I suffer that I may earn a name, or win applause, I will get no other reward than that of the Pharisee [hypocrite]. It is requisite also that love to Jesus, and love to His elect, be ever the mainspring [driving force] of all our patience. We must [should] manifest [show with transparency] the Spirit of Christ in meekness, gentleness, and forgiveness. Let us search and see if we truly suffer with Jesus.

  And if we do thus suffer, what is our "light affliction" compared with reigning with Him?

Oh it is so blessed to be in the furnace with Christ, and such an honor to stand in the pillory with Him, that if there were no future reward, we might count ourselves happy in present honor; but when the recompense is so eternal, so infinitely more than we have any right to expect, shall we not take up the cross with alacrity [enthusiastic joy], and

go on our way rejoicing?

 

A SINNER’S  PRAYER 

Whosoever shall call on the name of the lord shall be saved. Acts 2:21

 Pray and call on the name of the Lord Jesus, like this. Won’t you? 

 

“Lord Jesus, I’m a sinner. I’m lost and hopeless to save myself. Without you and your blood that was shed for me and Your death on the cross  I would spend eternity in Hell’s fire.

Thank you Lord Jesus that You love me and died for me before I was born and that You have always loved me and will never reject or turn your back on me. I know You are the Way, the Truth and the Life and that no one can come to the Father but by trusting in You.  

Thank you, Father that You have caused me to see myself as I am; a lost sinner.  But,  because of Your love and goodness, You have made a way and given me the desire to come to You, to turn away from my sin and to trust in You, Lord Jesus.  You took my place on the cross and provided the way for  me to be forgiven. Thank You.
Thank You that You prompted a desire in me to believe in You, the only begotten  Son of God who died on the cross to be the sacrifice that would  atone for my sins.

Thank You, Father for Your love that allowed Jesus to suffer and die in my place. Thank You that You raised Jesus from the dead. He is RISEN and is ALIVE and in Him we are victorious over sin, death and the grave and in Christ Jesus I am free.

You raised Jesus from the dead, gave Him a Glorified body and after he was seen by many witnesses on earth You took Him up to reign with You  in heaven.  

Thank you, Father,  for saving me in the name, of Your only begotten Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Thank you, Holy Spirit, that you always give witness to and exalt the Lord Jesus Christ.

You are invited to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal savior and Lord and to follow Him in believer’s baptism.

        Jesus came from Galilee  to Jordan to be baptized by John the Baptist. But, John forbad [refused] Him and said, “I have need to be baptized of You and [yet] you are coming to me?” [for baptism]  And Jesus answering him said, “Suffer it to be so [Do it] now: for thus it becometh us [is beautifully fitting and expected of us] to fulfil all righteousness.” 

        Baptism is not a requirement for salvation but it is the willing desire of all believers to demonstrate agreement and consistency with  the righteousness of preaching Repentance and Baptism as preached and practiced by John the Baptist is obedience to scriptural teaching.  The issue of baptism is therefore not an issue of salvation but of obedience and the fulfilling of all righteousness.

        Worshiping Him in Spirit and in truth will spring-up and be manifested in a sense of gratitude from all born again believers.  Such trust and worship can come through prayer, Bible reading, scriptural meditation and study. Fellowship in a local church body, hearing gospel preaching and singing of sacred hymns and spiritual songs are also acts of worship and reflects active discipleship.

        To this purpose, DailySpurgeon,  is offered as a reliable, dependable and effective resource.

* Not only were new converts won to the truth in Caesar's household, but after their conversion they remained in that household. They did not feel at liberty to abandon their post of duty because their surroundings were no longer congenial. [They were now out of their comfort zone but obliged to steadfastly remain and serve there] The truth had found them there, and there they remained, by their changed life and character testifying to the transforming power of their new found faith in Jesus Christ.  Thank you for your prayers.

Let us make daily use of our riches, and ever repair [return] to Him as to our own Lord in covenant, taking from Him the supply of all we need with as much boldness as men take money from their own purse [wallet].

The Inside  Story of Westcott and Hort:

In 1870, The Anglican Church of England passed a resolution to revise the English Bible. The New Testament revision committee which finally consisted of 25 scholars (though only about 16 eventually attended the meetings) which included Westcott and Hort. The committee worked for ten years in the Jerusalem chamber, and these two scholars swept the Revision Committee along with them after work commenced. In fact, the “Cambridge trio” (Westcott, Hort and Lightfoot) colluded with others to dominate the meetings with their views of the text and to defeat any who opposed them. Their *letters reveal this conspiracy:

The only voice defending the Textus Receptus was Dr Scrivener, probably the foremost scholar of the day in the manuscripts of the Greek New Testament and the history of the Text. But he was systematically outvoted by the Cambridge trio and outdone by Hort’s powerful debating skill. When the revision was completed, the revision committee had altered the Greek Text in 5,337 places,

thus violating the original rule that had been set for the committee of not altering the Greek Text unless absolutely necessary to do so.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, let it be said that no matter how good any modern version of the New Testament is in other ways, it is clearly blemished if the work of Westcott and Hort or Nestle & Aland.is present in it. The presence of their work means that it is based on  defective text. Those who honor the Word of God must not promote any of these versions by the church, not because the content of the version is entirely  evil in itself, but because being contented to use a weakened version rather than the existing, preserved, inerrant unblemished one, dishonors God. If God has preserved for His people a good Greek text of the New Testament for 18 centuries, how dishonoring it must  be to Him if His people now chose versions that are  based on  the defective and inferior  Greek manuscript  invented  by Westcott & Hort or Nestle & Aland.

"Christ in us is Christ reigning." reminds me [Spurgeon's comment] of Mr. Bunyan’s picture of [the town of] Mansoul, …when the Prince Immanuel laid siege to it, and Diabolus from within the city strove to keep him out. It was a, hard time for Mansoul then; but when at last the battering rams had broken down the gates, and the silver trumpets sounded, and the prince’s captains entered the breach, then on a day the prince himself did ride down the city’s streets, while liberated citizens welcomed him with all their hearts, hung out all their streamers, and made the church towers rock again as the bells rang out merry peals [melody] , for the king himself was come. Up to the castle of the heart he rode in triumph, and took his royal throne to be henceforth the sole lord and king of the city.

Christ in you is a right royal word. Christ swaying his scepter from the center of your being over every power and faculty, desire and resolve, bringing every thought into captivity to himself, oh, this is glory begun, and the sure pledge of heaven. Oh for more of the imperial sovereignty of Jesus; it is our liberty to be absolutely under his sway.
