This powerful, inspirational docudrama faithfully recreates the times of C.H. Spurgeon and brings the “people’s preacher” to life as it follows his trials and triumphs with historical accuracy. Here is the intimate story of one of the greatest preachers in the history of the church. We follow him from his youth where, as a young preacher he is surprisingly called to minister in London and soon captures the love and respect of the nation. He goes on to become one of its most influential figures. This powerful, inspirational docudrama faithfully recreates the times of C.H. Spurgeon and brings the “people’s preacher” to life as it follows his trials and triumphs with historical accuracy. Made by the award-winning Christian Television Association and filmed on location in England, Scotland, France and Germany, this film vividly captures the spirit and message of a man whose eventful — and sometimes controversial — life is highly relevant to the twenty-first century.

A SINNER’S PRAYER

PRAYER 8, Part 1 of 7
A PRAYER FOR HOLINESS.
OUR Father, we worship and love Thee; and it is one point of our worship that Thou art [are] Holy. Time was when we loved Thee for Thy mercy; we knew no more; but now Thou hast [have] changed our hearts and made us in love with goodness, purity, justice, true holiness; and we understand now why
“the cherubim and seraphim continually do cry, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts,”
We adore Thee because Thou art holy, and we love Thee for Thine infinite perfection. For now, we sigh and cry after holiness ourselves. Sanctify us wholly spirit, soul and body and set us apart for Your service.
Lord, we mourn over the sins of our past life and our present shortcomings. We bless Thee, Thou hast forgiven us; we are reconciled to Thee by the death of Thy Son. There are many who know that they have been washed, and that He that beareth [carries] away sin has borne [carried] their sin away. These are they who now cry to Thee to be delivered from the power of sin, to be delivered from the power of temptation without, but especially from indwelling sin within.
Lord, purify us in head, heart and hand; and if it be needful that we should be put into the fire to be refined as silver is refined, we would even welcome the fire if we may be rid of the dross [scum]. Lord, save us from constitutional sin [of mind or body], from sins of temperament [anger, attitude], from sins of our surroundings.
Save us from ourselves in every shape, and grant us especially to have the light of love strong within us. [In the name of the Lord Jesus] Amen.

ANECDOTE 191: Faith Awakened Through God’s Kindness.
I remember an old experimental Christian speaking about the great pillars of our faith; he was a sailor; we were then on-board ship, and there were sundry [various] huge posts on the shore, to which the ships were usually fastened, by throwing a cable over them. After I had told him a great many promises [from God’s Word], he said,
“I know they are good strong promises, but I cannot get near enough to shore to throw my cable around them; that is the difficulty.”
Now, it often happens that God’s past mercies and loving kindnesses would be good sure posts to hold on to, but we have not got faith enough to throw our cable round them, and so we go slipping [drifting] down the stream of unbelief, because we cannot stay [keep] ourselves by our former mercies. I will, however, give you something that I think you can throw your cable over.
If God has never been kind to you, one thing you surely know, and that is, he has been kind to others.

FAITH’S CHECKBOOK February 9 THE DROSS PURGED by C.H. Spurgeon 1834—1892
And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The Lord is my God- Zechariah 13:9
Grace transmutes [changes] us into precious metal, and then the fire and the furnace follow as a necessary consequence. Do we start [get shocked?] at this? Would we sooner be accounted worthless, that we might enjoy repose [rest], like the stones of the field? This would be to choose the viler part: like Esau, to take the pottage [stew], and give up the covenant portion [his birthright].
No, Lord; we will gladly be cast into the furnace rather than be cast out from thy presence! The fire only refines, it does not destroy. We are to be brought through the fire, not left in it. The Lord values His people as silver, and therefore He is at pains to purge away their dross [impurities] .
If we are wise, we shall rather welcome the refining process than decline it. Our prayer will be that our alloy [impurity] may be taken from us rather than that we should be withdrawn from the crucible [melting-pot].
O Lord, thou triest [test] us indeed! We are ready to melt under the fierceness of the flame. Still, this is thy way, and thy way is the best. Sustain [Empower] us under the trial and complete the process of our purifying, and we will be thine for ever and ever.
Prayer: Thank you Lord that You, will bring the [remaining] third part through the fire, and will refine us as silver is refined, and will try [test] us as gold is tried: we shall call on Your name, and You will hear us: You will say, It is my people: and we shall say, The Lord is my God Please refine and purify me, forgive me of all of my sins and help me to trust and obey you, in Jesus name, Amen.

MORNING February 9
"And David enquired of the Lord, " — 2 Samuel 5:23
─Y consultando David á Jehová — 2 Samuel 5:23
WHEN David made this inquiry, he had just fought the Philistines, and gained a signal [unique] victory. The Philistines came up in great hosts [armies], but, by the help of God, David had easily put them to flight. Note, however, that when they came a second time, David did not go up to fight them without inquiring of [praying to] the Lord. Once he had been victorious, and he might have said, as many have in other cases, "I shall be victorious again; I may rest quite sure that if I have conquered once, I shall triumph yet again. Why should I wait to seek the Lord?"
But not David.
He [David] had gained one battle by the strength of the Lord; he would not venture on another until he had insured the same [victory]. He inquired, [of God]
"Shall I go up against them?" He waited until God's sign was given.
Learn from David to take no step without God. Christian, if you want to know the path of duty, take God for your compass; if you want to steer your ship through the dark billows, put the tiller [rudder] into the hand of the Almighty.
Many a rock [shipwreck] might be escaped, if we would let our Father take the helm [control]; many a shoal [reef] or quicksand we might well avoid, if we would let His sovereign [divine] will choose and command.
The Puritan said,
"As sure as ever a Christian carves [cuts meat] for himself, he'll cut his own fingers."
This is a great truth. Said another old divine,
"He that goes before the cloud of God's providence goes on a fool's errand,"
and so, he does.
We must see God's providence leading us, and if providence waits, wait until providence comes. He who goes before providence will be very glad to run back again.
"I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt [you shall] go,"
is God's promise to His people.
Let us, then, take all our perplexities [difficulties] to Him, and say,
"Lord, what will you have me to do?"
Do not leave your chamber [room] this morning without inquiring of the Lord [praying to and hearing His answer].

EVENING February 9
"Lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil [the evil one]. " — Luke 11:4
─ Y no nos metas en tentación, mas líbranos del malo. — Lucas 11:4
What we are taught to seek or shun in prayer, we should equally pursue or avoid in action. Therefore, we should very earnestly avoid temptation, seeking to walk so guardedly in the path of obedience that we may never tempt the devil to tempt us.
We are not to enter the thicket in search of the lion. We might pay dearly for such presumption. This lion may cross our path or leap upon us from the thicket, but we should have nothing to do with hunting [looking for] him.
He who meets with him, even though he wins the day, will find it a stern struggle.
Let the Christian pray that he may be spared [may avoid] the encounter. Our Savior, who had experience of what temptation meant, earnestly admonished His disciples
"Pray that ye enter not into temptation [that you not be tempted]".
But, no matter what we do, we shall be tempted; hence the prayer
"deliver us from evil."
God had one Son without sin; but He has no son without temptation. The natural man is born to trouble [as surely] as the sparks fly upwards, and the Christian man is born to temptation just as certainly.
We must be always on our watch against Satan, because, like a thief, he gives no intimation [sign] of his approach. Believers who have experienced the ways of Satan know that there are certain seasons when he will most probably make an attack, just as at certain seasons bleak winds may be expected.
Because of this the Christian can guard against attack doubly:
by fear of danger and by preparing to meet it.
Prevention is better than cure:
it is better to be so well armed that the devil will not attack you than to endure the perils of the fight, even though you come out a conqueror.
This evening pray first that you may not be tempted, and next that if temptation is permitted, you may be delivered from the evil one [Satan].
A SINNER’S PRAYER: … FOR WHOSOEVER: [One and all]
Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Acts 2:21
Call on the name of the Lord Jesus and be saved … pray like this, won’t you?
“Lord Jesus, I’m a lost sinner and without You I am hopeless. I can’t save myself. Without your death on the cross for my sin debt I would be condemned to spend eternity condemned to Hell. I have been self-centered from birth. Please forgive me.
I realize that doing my best, being as good as possible, or being better than other people can never save me. . I’m guilty and sorry for each and every sin I have done and look to You to forgive me of them all.
I look to You, alone Lord Jesus to save me.
I call on You, Lord Jesus, right now to save me. You died on the cross for me, because of my sin and You say, “It shall come to pass that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Acts 2:21.
Right now, just as I am, I call on You, Lord Jesus to save me, I trust You, to be my Lord and Savior from now on.
Thank You, Lord Jesus, that You have forgiven me of all my sins. I ask You to abide in me and give me the desire to always follow You.
You paid the price for all of my sins by dying on the cross. Even the sins of the whole world.
Thank you, Lord Jesus that You loved me and died for me even before I was born and that You still love me now. I love You too.
Thank you, Heavenly Father, that You have called me away from sin and death into the Life everlasting in Your only begotten son, the Lord Jesus Christ.
Thank You, Heavenly Father that you raised Jesus from the dead. He is ALIVE and in Him we are victorious over sin, death and the grave. Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. [Holy Ghost, The Comforter, The Spirit of Truth]
Thank You for saving me heavenly Father. With all my heart, thank you Father for saving me in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Allow us to share the joy of your new birth with heaven. Won’t you? Heaven rejoices over each redeemed sinner. Luke 15:7

MISSION STATEMENT:
Our aim is to fulfill God’s purpose in us to save souls, strengthen and encourage believers in the Word, proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ as we serve those in need. We believe the Bible is God’s revealed Word and that through His Word He guides us as individuals and as a local body of believers. We are resolved, God helping us, to study, meditate and pray to rightly divide God’s revealed and preserved Word holding it as the final authority in all things.
The purpose of The John Mark Publishing Company is to make known the Gospel of The Lord Jesus Christ to everyone. We desire to show the love of Jesus to those in need, especially those in the household of faith. The Bible is God’s everlasting, inspired, (God breathed) inerrant, unchangeable, divinely protected and preserved message of salvation to the whole world. It is the essence of the ministry inspired here.
The inspirational source of preaching, teaching and writing by Charles Haddon Spurgeon is from this same essence. His writings continue to be much read and much used today in the support of Gospel preaching. Such ministry is still flourishing in London at the Metropolitan Tabernacle, the church constructed for the 6,000 member congregation in the 1800's. Our effort here is to increase the publication, circulation and use of Spurgeon's materials for the benefit of the church body as well as all other readers. To this end we have arranged a daily Table of Contents and have added brief annotations [shown in brackets] while maintaining a strict fidelity to the original and unabridged text.
The Published Titles from Spurgeon that are included exclusively each day in the Devotion are:
· C.H. Spurgeon Prayers
· Spurgeon’s Illustrative Anecdotes
· Faith’s Checkbook
· Morning & Evening
These titles are selected from the inspired body of work created from the preaching and writing of Charles Haddon Spurgeon 1834-1892. He created an excellent legacy of gospel preaching and exposition and is known as the “Prince of Preachers”. Spurgeon has been and is today widely read with great benefit from the 1800’s to this present time. He is the beloved founder of the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London, England (Still thriving TODAY through the faithful preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.) [Click to live-stream current gospel preaching in real time each Sunday from London by Dr. Peter Masters, Metropolitan Tabernacle pastor since 1970.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, please bless Your disciples toward the winning of many souls, and help us to be loving and compassionate toward all who are in need, especially those in the household of faith. I pray this in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and for His sake, Amen.
Disclaimer: The John Mark Publishing Company does not praise or exalt Charles H. Spurgeon beyond the honor due him. He didn’t need or want it when he was on earth and would have no need or desire for it now. Our aim is to lift up and glorify the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and to preach HIM and Him crucified.
Precaution: These Messages and prayers alone will not substitute for continual fellowship with the Lord Jesus. Neither do they replace personal reading, meditation, prayer and fasting over God's divinely preserved and eternal Word. (The King James version (KJV), known also as the Authorized Version (AV), is the preferred English Bible because its accuracy and fidelity to the Greek Textus Receptus [received text] and the Hebrew Masoretic Text) avoid doctrinal and editorial weaknesses found in many contemporary editions.
Prayer Selection by Spurgeon must not be offered as a substitute for personal, intimate fervent, heart-felt, prayer. It is intended rather, to warm the hearts of those who are in prayer seeking a season of authentic two-way, heart-to-heart fellowship and prayer with the Father, His Son and the Holy Spirit. Read from the NT Book of Romans Chapter 8.

https://www.febc.edu.sg/v15/article/def_the_inside_story_of_westcott_and_hort
In 1870, The Anglican Church of England passed a resolution to revise the English Bible. The New Testament revision committee which finally consisted of 25 scholars (though only about 16 eventually attended the meetings) which included Westcott and Hort. The committee worked for ten years in the Jerusalem chamber, and these two scholars swept the Revision Committee along with them after work commenced. In fact, the “Cambridge trio” (Westcott, Hort and Lightfoot) colluded with others to dominate the meetings with their views of the text and to defeat any who opposed them. Their *letters reveal this conspiracy:
* Letters from close relatives are quoted in the Inside Story above
The only voice defending the Textus Receptus was Dr Scrivener, probably the foremost scholar of the day in the manuscripts of the Greek New Testament and the history of the Text. But he was systematically outvoted by the Cambridge trio and outdone by Hort’s powerful debating skill. When the revision was completed, the revision committee had altered the Greek Text in 5,337 places,
thus violating the original rule that had been set for the committee of not altering the Greek Text unless absolutely necessary to do so.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, let it be said that no matter how good any modern version of the New Testament is in other ways, it is clearly blemished if the work of Westcott and Hort is present in it. The presence of their work means that it is based on a defective text. Those who want to honor the Word of God must not promote the use of any of these versions by the church, not because the content of the version is evil in itself, but because the attitude of being contented to use a blemished version rather than an existing unblemished one, dishonors God. If God has taken the trouble to preserve for His people a good Greek text of the New Testament for 18 centuries, how dishonoring it would be to Him if His people now chose instead to change over to a version that is based on a defective text.
Let the biblical story of Nadab and Abihu be a lesson to all:
And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not. And there went out fire from the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD. Then Moses said unto Aaron, This is it that the LORD spake, saying, I will be sanctified in them that come nigh me, and before all the people I will be glorified. And Aaron held his peace. And Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said unto them, Come near, carry your brethren from before the sanctuary out of the camp. So they went near, and carried them in their coats out of the camp; as Moses had said. And Moses said unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons, Uncover not your heads, neither rend your clothes; lest ye die, and lest wrath come upon all the people: but let your brethren, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning which the LORD hath kindled” (Lev 10:1–6).
