 O LORD, many of us feel like the lame man at the Beautiful Gate of the temple. Come by this way and make the lame ones perfectly sound [healed].  O Lord, Thou canst [can] do by Thy servants today what Thou didst [did] by them in the olden time. Work miracles of mercy even upon outer court worshippers who are too lame to get into the holy place.

[We ask this in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.]

Anecdote 280:|   A Wasted Life.

         Your sins cannot keep you from the jaws of death.  I say, sinner, I want thee to look at Christ’s sepulchre, too, for when thou diest [die] it may have done thee great good to think of it.

        You have heard of Queen Elizabeth, crying out that she would give an empire for a single hour. Or have you heard the despairing cry of the gentleman on board the  “Arctic,”  when it was going down, who shouted to the boat, “Come back! I will give you  £ 30,000  if you will come and take me in.” Ah! poor man, it were but little if he had thirty thousand worlds, if he could thereby prolong his life: “ Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath, will he give for his life.”

        Some of you who can laugh this morning, who came to spend a merry hour in this hall, will be dying, and then ye will pray and crave [set one's heart on] life, and shriek for another [one more] Sabbath-day. Oh! how the Sabbaths ye have wasted will walk like ghosts before you! Oh!  how they will shake their snaky hair in your eyes ! How will ye be made to sorrow and weep, because ye wasted precious hours, which, when they are gone, are gone too far to be recalled.  

May God save you from the pangs of remorse.

          Some of us have been like the tribe of Gad. Our adversaries for a while were too many for us, they came upon us like a troop. Yes, and for the moment they overcame us; and they exulted [celebrated]  greatly because of their temporary victory. Thus they only proved the first part of the family heritage to be really ours, for Christ’s  people, like Dan, shall have a troop overcoming them. This being overcome is very painful, and we should have despaired if we had not by faith believed the second line of our father’s  benediction,

 
-He shall overcome at the last-.  

–All’s  well that ends well,-  said the world’s poet; and he spoke the truth. A war is to be judged, not by first successes or defeats, but by that which happens -at the last.-  

        The Lord will give to truth and righteousness victory  -at the last-; and, as  Mr.[John]  Bunyan  [Author of world’s most famous allegory,  The Pilgrim's Progress]  says, that means forever, for nothing can come after the last.

        What we need is patient perseverance in well-doing, calm confidence in our glorious Captain.  Christ, our Lord Jesus, would teach us His holy art of setting the face like a flint to go through with work or suffering till we can say,

-It is finished.- Hallelujah.

Victory! Victory! We believe the promise. -He shall overcome at the last.-

Prayer: Thank you Lord  for victory for the tribe of Gad and for us [Those who trust in You]  – Your Word says, “a troop shall overcome him [Gad]: but he shall overcome at the last-   Help me to trust You to the last, Lord Jesus in Your name I pray, Amen.

          IT is well there is One who is ever [always] the same, and who is ever with us. It is well there is one stable  rock amid the billows of the sea of life. O my soul,  set not [don’t set] your affections on rusting, moth-eaten, decaying treasures, but set your heart on Him who abides [stays] forever faithful to you. Build not [Don’t build] your house on the moving quick-sands of a deceitful world, but found [build the foundation of] your hopes on this rock, which, amid [in the midst of] descending rain and roaring floods, will stand immovably secure, Irresistible.

        My soul, I charge you, lay up your treasure in the only secure cabinet; store your jewels where you can never lose them. Put your all in [Jesus] Christ; set all your affections on His person, all your hope in His merit, all your trust in His efficacious [Irresistible] blood, all your joy in His presence, and then you may laugh at loss, and defy destruction.

        Remember that all the flowers in the world's garden fade by turns [little-by-little], and the day is coming when nothing will be left but the black, cold earth.

        Death's black extinguisher must soon put out your candle.

 
Oh, how sweet to have sunlight when the candle is gone! 

        The dark flood must soon roll between you and all you have; then

wed [marry] your heart to Him who will never leave you;

trust yourself with Him who will go with you through the black and surging current of death's stream, and who will land you safely on the celestial shore, and make you sit with Him in heavenly places for ever.

Go, sorrowing son of affliction,

tell your secrets to the Friend [Jesus Christ] who sticks closer than a brother. 

Trust all your concerns with Him who never can be taken from you, who will never leave you, and

who will never let you leave Him,

even "Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, and today, and forever."

"Lo [look], I am with you always," is enough for my soul to live on, let who will [everyone else]  forsake me.

           OUR God's tender love for His servants makes Him concerned for the state of their inward feelings. He desires them to be of good courage. Some esteem [value] it a small thing for a believer to be vexed [troubled] with doubts and fears, but God does not think so. From this text it is plain that our Master would not have us entangled with fears. He would have us without anxiety [stress], without doubt, without cowardice. Our Master does not think so lightly of our unbelief as we do. When we are desponding [despondent] we are subject to a grievous malady [a serious illness], not to be trifled with, but to be carried at once to the beloved Physician.

Our Lord does not love to see our countenance [expression of our face] sad. It was a law of Ahasuerus [Queen (Esther’s husband)]  that no one should come into the king's court dressed in mourning [sackcloth black and ashes]: this is not the law of the King of kings, for we may come mourning as we are; but still

He would have us put off the spirit of heaviness and put on the garment of praise

 [Be happy], for there is much reason to rejoice. The Christian man ought to be of a coura­geous spirit, in order that he may glorify the Lord by enduring trials in an heroic manner.

        If he be fearful and fainthearted, it will dishonor his God. Besides, what a bad example it is. This disease of doubtfulness and dis­couragement is an epidemic that soon spreads among the Lord's flock [believers].

        One downcast believer makes twenty souls sad. Moreover, unless your courage is kept up Satan will be too much for you. Let your spirit be joyful in God your Savior,

the joy of the Lord shall be your strength,

and no fiend of hell shall make headway against you: but cowardice throws down the banner.

Moreover, labor is light to a man of cheerful spirit; and success waits upon cheerfulness. The man who toils, rejoicing in his God, believing with all his heart, has success guaranteed.

He who sows in hope shall reap in joy; therefore, dear reader,

"be thou strong, and very courageous."

A SINNER’S PRAYER:   … FOR WHOSOEVER: [For One and all]

Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Acts 2:21
Call on the name of the Lord Jesus and be saved     … pray like this, won’t you?   

“Lord Jesus, I’m a lost sinner and without You I am hopeless.  I can’t save myself. Without your death on the cross for my sin debt I would be condemned to spend eternity condemned to Hell. I have been  self-centered from birth.  Please forgive me.

I realize that doing my best, being as good as possible, or being better than other people can never save me. . I’m guilty and sorry for each and every sin I have done and look to You to forgive me of them all. 
I look to You, alone  Lord Jesus to save me.
I call on You,  Lord Jesus, right now to save me.  You died on the cross for me, because of my sin  and You say,  “It shall come to pass that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Acts 2:21.

Right now, just as I am, I call on You, Lord Jesus to save me,  I trust You, to  be my Lord and Savior from now on.
Thank You, Lord Jesus, that You have forgiven me of all my sins.  I ask You to abide in me and give me the desire to always follow You.
You paid the price for all of my sins by dying on the cross.  Even the sins of the whole world.

Thank you,  Lord Jesus that You loved me and died for me even before I was born and that You still love me now. I love You too.

 

Thank you, Heavenly Father, that You have called me away from sin and death into the Life everlasting  in Your only begotten son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Thank You, Heavenly Father that you raised Jesus from the dead. He is ALIVE and in Him we are victorious over sin, death and the grave. Romans  8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. [Holy Ghost, Comforter, Spirit of Truth]
 

Thank You for saving me heavenly Father. With all my heart, thank you Father for saving me in Jesus’ name,  Amen.

Allow us to share the joy of your new birth with heaven. Won’t you? Heaven rejoices over each redeemed sinner. Luke 15:7

In 1870, The Anglican Church of England passed a resolution to revise the English Bible. The New Testament revision committee which finally consisted of 25 scholars (though only about 16 eventually attended the meetings) which included Westcott and Hort. The committee worked for ten years in the Jerusalem chamber, and these two scholars swept the Revision Committee along with them after work commenced. In fact, the “Cambridge trio” (Westcott, Hort and Lightfoot) colluded with others to dominate the meetings with their views of the text and to defeat any who opposed them. Their *letters reveal this conspiracy:

The only voice defending the Textus Receptus was Dr Scrivener, probably the foremost scholar of the day in the manuscripts of the Greek New Testament and the history of the Text. But he was systematically outvoted by the Cambridge trio and outdone by Hort’s powerful debating skill. When the revision was completed, the revision committee had altered the Greek Text in 5,337 places,

thus violating the original rule that had been set for the committee of not altering the Greek Text unless absolutely necessary to do so.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, let it be said that no matter how good any modern version of the New Testament is in other ways, it is clearly blemished if the work of Westcott and Hort is present in it. The presence of their work means that it is based on a defective text. Those who want to honor the Word of God must not promote the use of any of these versions by the church, not because the content of the version is entirely  evil in itself, but because being contented to use a weakened version rather than the existing, preserved without error unblemished one, dishonors God. If God has preserved for His people a good Greek text of the New Testament for 18 centuries, how dishonoring it would be to Him if His people now chose instead to use versions that are  based on  defective Greek manuscript  created by Westcott and Hort or Nestle and Aland.

Let the biblical story of Nadab and Abihu be a lesson to all:

And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not. And there went out fire from the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD. All other versions are translated from Greek text created by either  Westcott and Hort  or the Nestle-Aland that was  rendered by “Chery-picking” only 55 Greek manuscripts or fragments. These do not even agree with themselves and far less with the preserved and protected Textus Receptus.
